Kokeshiya
A moment to unwind in the city.
A long-established fixture in Nishi-Ogikubo, Kokeshiya spans morning tea towers and country sandwiches, savarins and mille-feuille, through to classic French dining.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A familiar presence just outside Nishi-Ogikubo Station, Kokeshiya accommodates everything from an early tea break to a full sit-down dinner. In the morning, the eye-catching Morning Tea Tower presents a tiered stand loaded with salad, selected pastries, and a yogurt dessert. Drink pairings range from fragrant pots of Mariage Frères Marco Polo to a café crème served with milk on the side so you can adjust the richness to taste, as well as single-origin French press coffee. Those looking for a heartier start will find sugar toast browned with cultured butter and cane sugar, egg-soaked pain perdu, and country sandwiches layered with tender roast beef, arugula, and cheese.
The shop display case and tearoom tables make the house sweets one of the main reasons to stop by. Two longstanding signatures stand out: the rum-soaked savarin and the mille-feuille, prepared each day with fresh-baked puff pastry and whipped cream. The pastry selection also includes cream puffs made with direct-sourced farm eggs, a layered Japanese chestnut and caramel mousse, and an Earl Grey creation concealing orange crème brûlée. A rich Basque-style cheesecake, dense chocolate terrine, and warming hot chocolate round out the teatime choices.
The savoury kitchen moves easily between tearoom staples and formal French cuisine. Guests can start with a casual croque-monsieur or mixed sandwich, or settle in with marinated seafood and onion gratin soup. Meat courses feature red wine–braised beef or ox tongue, breaded veal cutlets, and grilled beef fillet steaks, well suited to an evening over wine or beer. At midday, multi-course lunch options provide an easy way to combine an appetizer, soup of the day, and a choice of fish or meat.
Subdued, classic interior tones and attentive table service create a calm environment for conversation and dining. In addition to dine-in service, the shop maintains an extensive takeaway counter stocked with gift-ready baked goods, including sablés, madeleines, and assorted cookie tins. From an unhurried morning tea to an afternoon cake or a hearty French dinner, Kokeshiya adapts gracefully to any hour of the day.
